It's On Days Like These

The neighbour had said that she was reporting him to the authorities. The authorities appeared at his front door an hour later. They showed him their authority. He showed them the way. They never reappeared.

Sometime later the neighbour accosted him. Ranting about his accountability. Railing about his unconcern. He smiled at her. Her frustration led to violent actions. He shrugged off her abuse. Dealing with her would be a final pleasure.

It's on days like these that he felt the benefit of unconcern.
