Hawick 2022

This set of haiku were written during a weekend in Hawick in the the Scottish borders which involved walkin, drinking, folk music and rain.

The leaves are leaving

Smoke from chimneys haunts the air

Undressed autumn day

Climbing to Fatlips

Broad weakling sun on their backs

Modern reivers stride

Summer in denial

Brave heart never defeated

Flodden forgotten

Old Victorian park

Tidied past behind clear glass

Boxed lawns, gravelled paths

Flashing electric blue

'gainst the dreich of the water

Rare seen Kingfisher

Where track meets tarmac

White mist lies over the hill

Falling rain again

Turn right by the burn

Choose the well worn drovers track

Lined by gnarled ash trees

Legend takes his place

Tales spill across the table

Of who, when and why

 —

The church bell tolls eight

Ring around the borders town

Feet begin to stir

 —

Stone hardened by steam

Striding above snorting pigs

In the drooping rain
